SBC Communications, Inc.
SBC Communications Inc. (www.sbc.com) is one of the world’s leading data, voice and Internet services providers. Through its world-class networks, SBC companies provide a full range of voice, data, networking and e-business services, as well as directory advertising and publishing. A Fortune 30 company, SBC is America’s leading provider of high-speed DSL Internet Access services and one of the nation’s leading Internet Service Providers. Internationally, SBC companies have telecommunications investments in 27 countries.
When SBC approached Translations.com, the business case for creating a Spanish language version of SBC.com was well established. The challenge for SBC existed primarily in coordination of the effort with the resources available. To accomplish the business goal, SBC needed a flexible partner and one who could provide services beyond traditional localization support. Primary challenges to the initiative:
- Produce Spanish language site with no additional headcount
- Construct project management teams and localization workflows so that SBC’s agency of record, Fleishman Hillard, and Translations.com take on the majority of the localization tasks
- Cause no impact on related SBC business units and IT resources
The solution developed for SBC by Translations.com and Fleishman Hillard includes the following elements:
- Fleishman Hillard assumes localization management roles traditionally assumed by client resources as well as some tasks traditionally assumed by localization vendor resources
- Fleishman Hillard subcontracts all localization work to Translations.com, thereby reducing impact to SBC resources even to the accounting level
- Translations.com provides hosting for the SBC Spanish site
- Translations.com provides nightly data transfers to SBC with full security measures for all data collected on the SBC Spanish site
Based on the creative and flexible solution for SBC’s Spanish site localization, Translations.com, in conjunction with Fleishman Hillard, now provides support for not only Spanish, but also three Asian languages.
